Save the dates!
Each year, the Viking Marching Band and Color Guard (VMB) competes with bands from all over Southern California, in field show tournaments – or “comps” – adjudicated by the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA).
For SCSBOA-adjudicated comps, bands are assigned to one of six (6) divisions based on total number of woodwind, brass, and percussion performers (“performing musicians”):
• Class 1A: 1-50 musicians
• Class 2A: 51-70 musicians
• Class 3A: 71-90 musicians
• Class 4A: 91-120 musicians
• Class 5A: 121-150 musicians
• Class 6A: 151 & above musicians
This year, with 114 musicians – plus 1 non-performing Drum Major and 14 in the “Auxiliary,” or Color Guard – the VMB will compete in the 4A division, at the following tournaments/comps:
October 20, 2018 – 31st Annual Baldwin Park Field Tournament at Baldwin Park High School, 3900 N. Puente Ave, Baldwin Park, CA 91706
October 27, 2018 – Simi Valley 50th Annual Band Spectacular at Simi Valley High School, 5400 Cochran Street, Simi Valley, CA 93063
November 3, 2018 – 46th Annual RUSD Lester Oaks Memorial Tournament at Ramona High School, 7675 Magnolia Ave, Riverside, CA 92504
November 8, 2018 – 7th Annual Valencia High School Field Show Tournament at Valencia High School, 27801 Dickason Drive, Valencia, CA 91355
November 10, 2018 – Savanna High School 42nd Annual Field Tournament at Glover Stadium, 1125 N. La Palma Parkway, Anaheim, CA 92801
Shortly before each comp, members of the VMB and their families will receive an email with all of the details regarding the Samohi performance and student call times. This information will also be posted on the Samohi Band website, a few days before each competition.
A championships grid will be maintained and made available on the SCSBOA website for ensembles to track their placement. The grid will consist of all groups, separated by division, attempting to qualify for championships; all show dates that qualify for championships; all scores received by the groups listed; and a running tally of the combination of the 3 highest scores obtained by each group.
The top 12 ensembles in each division will be invited to perform at the SCSBOA Field Show Championships. This year, 4A Division Championships will be held:
Saturday, November 17th at a location to be determined. We expect the VMB to be there.

It is an evening comp. Students typically leave school right after lunch, and return to Samohi shortly after their performance.

Does anyone know what time the performance is tonight? The schedule isn’t posted.
Important Times for Saturday
10:45 am: Call time at Samohi
7:15 pm: Viking’s showtime at Baldwin Park High School
Plan to arrive at least 30-45 minutes before to allow for parking and seating. Entry is only allowed between each performance.
10:45: Pick up at Samohi, after truck is unloaded
