Samohi Band is thrilled to announce that two of our students are winners of the 2021 YoungArts award.

Miles Tobel, 11th grade, was recognized in the voice category as a singer-songwriter, and William Schwartzman, 10th grade, received recognition for jazz piano.

Selected through the organization’s prestigious competition, YoungArts award winners are chosen through a rigorous, blind adjudication process in which they are judged for their caliber of artistic achievement by a panel of esteemed artists from each discipline.

This year, YoungArts chose 659 of the most accomplished young visual, literary, and performing artists from across the country, and the winners will have opportunities for financial, creative, and professional-development support throughout their entire careers.

YoungArts awards are given in three categories: Finalist, Honorable Mention, and Merit. YoungArts award winners at all levels receive cash prizes between $100 and $10,000 and the opportunity to learn from such leading artists as Debbie Allen, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Frank Gehry, Wynton Marsalis, Salman Rushdie, and Mickalene Thomas.

Our winners join a distinguished group of accomplished artists including Daniel Arsham, Terence Blanchard, Camille A. Brown, Viola Davis, Allegra Goodman, Josh Groban, Judith Hill, Tarell Alvin McCraney, Andrew Rannells, Desmond Richardson, and Hunter Schafer.
