THE JERRY HERMAN AWARDS is a local celebration dedicated to recognizing, encouraging, and rewarding achievements and excellence in high school musical theatre. It is the local award ceremony for THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARDS, also known as The Jimmys, which take place annually at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway in New York City.
The Samohi Bands are proud to announce that the Santa Monica High School Musical Theatre Pit Orchestra has won the 2023 Jerry Herman Award for Best Orchestra. Congratulations to the Pit Orchestra and Director Terry Sakow!
Samohi Theatre’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone was directed by Kate Barraza, Director of Samohi Theatre, with the support of Musical Director Terry Sakow, Vocal Director Jeffe Huls, Executive Producer Joan Krenik, Producers Gabrielle Cohen and Erin Neumeyer, Costume Designer Shannon Kennedy, and Choreographers Cat Heinen and Josie Marasco. During a seven-month period this school year, 33 eligible high school productions were either attended in person or judged virtually by adjudicators, and scored in multiple creative, technical and performance categories, much like Broadway’s Tony® Awards.
Samohi was nominated for two awards this year: the Best Orchestra award, and the Best Supporting Actress award for Haley Mullane, in the role of Trix the Aviatrix.
