Bernie Dresel. Photo By Alex Solca.Bernie Dresel has been one of the busiest studio and live musicians in the world as both a drummer and percussionist. He occupied the coveted drum chair for Grammy Award-winning Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band since its inception in 1999 until 2015. He was also co-writer for Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band Play-Along Series For Drums (as well as the follow-up Volume 2). For 15 years (1992 to 2006), he was the drummer for the multi-Grammy Award-winning Brian Setzer Orchestra, selling close to 4 million records. Modern Drummer magazine’s readers’ poll named Bernie “Best Big Band Drummer” and Drum! Magazine has put him on their list of “53 Drummers Who Made a Difference in the ’90s” as well as honoring him with a Drummie® for Best Big Band Drummer.
Bernie has just released the debut record of his exciting new big band, The BBB featuring Bernie Dresel, entitled Live n’ Bernin’  (available everywhere CDs, vinyl, Blu-Rays, and digital downloads are sold). This group is without question one of the world’s most exciting large jazz ensembles and some have called it the best big band album in decades!  The BBB provides potent testimony to the sheer exhilaration of big band jazz.…intensely and energetically showcasing Bernie’s extraordinary musical and technical drumming talents.
Bernie’s credits with respect to motion picture and television soundtracks represent “A-list” television work such as The SimpsonsFamily Guy, American Dad, and recent movies such as Coco, Planet of the Apes, Spider Man: Homecoming, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World, Zootopia, Inside Out, Tomorrowland, Star Trek, Minions, Despicable Me 3, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek Beyond, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Mission Impossible 3, American Sniper, Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Superman: Man Of Steel, Up, The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, Cars 2, Super 8, Transformers 3, Get On Up, Ratatouille, and many more! You can also see, as well as hear, Bernie on the silver screen in Jersey Boys and the Country Bears. Bernie Dresel’s complete list of movie and television credits is extensive.
In addition to The BBB Featuring Bernie Dresel, Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Bernie has recorded/performed with hundreds of artists from all genres: A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, Maynard Ferguson, Chaka Khan, Andrea Bocelli, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Seth MacFarlane, Dixie Chicks, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, LeAnn Rimes, Andy Summers, Brian May, Men At Work, Herb Alpert, David Sanborn, Johnny Mathis, Lou Rawls, Barry Manilow, Eric Idle, Expose, James Taylor, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Jack Jones, Little Richard, Dr. John, Albert Lee, Gene Simmons, B.B. King, Patti LaBelle, Luis Miquel, The 5th Dimension, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Paula Abdul, Celine Dion, and many others.

Why Donate to the Bands?

Stuff and Staff:

In Santa Monica, we are fortunate to have a school district that supports the arts. At the high school level, SMMUSD provides funding for two full time Band directors, partial funding for Color Guard instruction, and a small stipend for Instructional Aide in Band classrooms for a few hours per week.

The Samohi Band Parents Association (BPA) seeks donations and raises funds to supplement what the district provides, so that the program can continue to provide the highest quality music education to our students.

You may have heard the expression “Stuff vs. Staff” in relation to fundraising at SMMUSD schools.* For the Samohi Band program, the Barents Association (BPA) pays for the following:

The Samohi “Symphonic Winds” show off their new music folders.

  • Music folders – Some classes got new folders this year!
  • Music stands
  • Sheet music royalty/rental fees
  • Photocopies (the BPA paid 1/3 the cost to purchase a photocopier used by the Samohi Band, Choir and Orchestra directors)
  • Band Room lockers and related supplies
  • New instrument purchases
  • School-owned instrument repairs and supplies
  • Concert programs
  • Student awards
  • Concert, Marching, and Jazz festival entry fees
  • Marching Band & Guard uniforms and supplies

and Staff

  • Full-time percussion instructor for all 5 Concert Band classes
  • Jazz Band II instructor
  • Concert Band festival adjudicators/clinicians
  • Partial funding for the Color Guard Caption Head & Color Guard Tech
  • Marching Band Percussion Caption Head & Percussion Tech
  • Marching Band Visual Caption Head & 2 Visual Techs
  • Miscellaneous Concert and Jazz Band Clinicians

On average, the BPA spends $250 per pupil per year on the Concert Band program, and $750 per pupil per year on students enrolled in Marching Band or Color Guard. We hope that you will consider contributing to our 2017-18 Direct Donation campaign.

Thank you for supporting the Samohi Bands!

*RE: “Stuff and Staff” in SMMUSD:  In general, the PTAs raise funds for necessary “stuff” such as supplies, books and equipment at school sites, while your donations to the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation fund additional staff and programs at each school. For the Samohi Band program, the BPA pays both.

Band Homework – Register Now!

A message from Band Parent Association President Richard Krop:

Welcome to the 2017-2018 Samohi Bands!

Dear Samohi Band Musicians and Families,

Welcome to the Samohi Band 2017-18 season. The and Parents Association and the Band Directors Kevin McKeown and Terry Sakow are looking forward to sharing amazing performances with Band families & friends in the upcoming year. The officers of the Band Parent Organization “SMAPA-Samohi Bands” are already hard at work planning events. To those musicians and families who are entering the Band program for the first time, we extend a special welcome.

To be sure that you receive calendar updates and performance call times throughout the year, please register your contact information with us using the “2017-18 All-Bands Registration Form.”

These forms are a Concert Band homework assignment to be completed by Friday, September 8 for a pass/fail grade. Please complete these forms online. Parents may fill out the form with the help of a volunteer at our Band Parent potluck on Tuesday. If you have difficulty with the online form, printed forms are available from Mr. McKeown and Mr. Sakow. Students may return all donations, purchases, student permission forms and other forms to the directors.

If you have already registered with the Marching Band, you do NOT need to register again online.

The Band Parent Association will kick of the year with a meeting next Tuesday, September 5, at the Moose Lodge. This is a great chance to meet your fellow parents and discuss the upcoming year. This is a potluck, please go to this sign up link today!

For more information about travel, and for the answers to any questions about concert formal wear, concert tickets or anything else related to the Bands, please attend our next meeting on Tuesday September 5 at 7pm at the Moose Lodge.
Thank you for your support!
