Samohi Band Students Free Tix to B@B

An Invitation from Mr. McKeown:
Band Students,
I hope you will join us as my guest at the 6th annual “Bands at the Broad” benefit concert on Tuesday, February 6th. The concert supports our Concert Band Tour Scholarship Fund.
All current Samohi Band students may enter without purchasing a ticket. Just show your Samohi ID at the Box Office.
This event is a remarkable opportunity for Samohi Band families to enjoy a relatively low-cost performance at The Broad Stage, a state-of-the-art facility housed within a striking, modern architectural landmark.
This year’s concert celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, featuring some of his best-loved works. The performance also includes portions of the symphonic suite El Olimpo de los Dioses (Gods of Olympus) by Óscar Navarro.
Desserts and beverages are served during Intermission, giving this event a festive “date night” atmosphere. I hope to see you there!
– Mr. McKeown

2017 Marching Band Picture Day – REVISED

Dear Marching Band families,

DUE TO POOR AIR QUALITY, Marching Band Picture Day has been moved to Wednesday, December 13th on the Santa Monica Pier.

FOR STUDENTS:  Please meet near the carousel on the Santa Monica Pier at 7:00 am on Wednesday, December 13th. Wear you hair however you would like it to look in photos. Please bring picture order forms to the Pier. Do not bring order forms to Samohi.

Front Ensemble members:  If you do not have Dinkles, please contact your instructor Mariam Kaddoura ASAP. There will be Dinkles available for you to borrow on picture day, but we need to know your size!

FOR PARENTS:  Mr. McKeown is making arrangements to bring the musicians’ uniforms to the Pier. He will give the students any other instructions they need. Typically, all group and individual photos are finished in plenty of time for students to walk from the Pier to their first period classes on campus. On December 13th – a Late Start Wednesday – Period 1 class begins at 9:38 am.

If you would like to order photos, please ask your student for the order form from YARY PHOTOGRAPHY. You can pay by cash or check in the envelope. Credit cards are accepted, but you must call at least 48 hours to picture day to get credit card approval.

You may also order photos online at Just click on “PRE-ORDER” at the top of the page, and then use the search bar to search for “Santa Monica.” After you enter your email address, you will see a list of available photo packages. This is a good option, if you are afraid your student will forget to bring the order envelope on Picture Day.

2018 Bob Cole Honors Festival at CSULB

Outside Performance Opportunity: Bob Cole Honors Festival at CSULB

Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 3.53.00 PM (2)
The third Bob Cole Conservatory Honors Festival is coming up soon! This festival will bring together the most talented student musicians from across Southern California to perform in a Wind Symphony, a Concert Choir, and String ensemble. The Bob Cole Honors Festival is unique: students will have the opportunity to work closely with renowned conductors, guest artists, and Honors Festival faculty. This year’s guest artists are trombone soloist Andy Martin, choral conductor Dr. Iris Levine from Cal Poly Pomona, and violist, Che-Yen Brian Chen of the USC Thornton School of Music.

Guest artists will present master classes for each ensemble, and Honors Festival faculty will offer sectionals and group instruction to all students. This festival, unlike other honor bands, orchestras, or choirs, includes learning opportunities for every participant well beyond the invaluable experience of intensive rehearsals and a public performance with other outstanding musicians. To see pictures from last year’s festival go to:  The Bob Cole Conservatory Honors Festival Facebook Page

The Bob Cole Conservatory Honors Festival will be held on: January 5, 6, and 7, 2018
Due to a generous grant from California State University, Long Beach the regular festival participation rate of $160.00 has been reduced to $35.00, which will be collected after acceptance to the festival. We also have a limited number of need-based scholarships for those wishing to attend but not able to afford the $35.00 participation rate.

Personnel for the Bob Cole Honor Wind Symphony, String Chamber, and Concert Choir will be selected by digital video audition from interested students, grades 10-12. The Conductors for the Bob Cole Honor Festival will be:
Wind Symphony: Prof. John Carnahan/ Dr. Jermie Arnold
Concert Choir: Dr. Joshua Palkki
String Chamber: Prof. Moni Simeonov
Before you submit auditions please make sure you will be able to attend the Festival (Jan 5-7), and do NOT have another event/situation that will prevent you from coming, in the event you are invited. Also, please be aware that participants must attend ALL rehearsals during the Festival in order to be accepted and perform in the concert on January 7, 2018.
All audition information and applications are found at:
Wind players are to prepare and submit two brief contrasting etudes or solo excerpts of their own choosing, and the appropriate scales found on the Audition Recording Procedures sheet.
Percussionists may audition on any one, two or all three of the following instruments: Snare Drum, Mallets, and Timpani. If a percussionist chooses to audition on one instrument only, he/she must prepare and submit two contrasting etudes or solo excerpts on that particular instrument. If a percussionist chooses to audition on two or three instruments, he/she need only prepare and submit one etude or solo excerpt on each instrument. Although not required, all percussionists are encouraged to audition on multiple instruments. Rudiments for battery percussion auditions are NOT necessary for the Bob Cole Honors Festival audition procedure. However, scales are included in the mallet auditions.
Harp and Piano: If you would like to audition on one of these instruments, please submit an audition, and then we will let you know if those instruments are needed.
String applicants should prepare a two octave scale of their choosing and select and perform two contrasting excerpts.
Vocalists should prepare and perform a single Italian Art Song, Aria or American Folk Song.
Complete instructions for the recording procedure and audition requirements are found here

Applications/Auditions must be emailed no later than Friday, December 8, 2017

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Arnold at (562) 985-5433.

2017-18 Tuxedo Rental Recap

Tuxedo fittings took place during Concert Band classes last Friday, October 6th. Here are a few things you might like to know, if you have decided to rent a tuxedo from Elite Tuxedo this school year:

1.  Student Tuxedo Pick-Up Day:

A notice will go out to advise the day that tuxedos will be delivered to Samohi for your student to pick up.  Please have your student try on the garment within 1-2 days of receipt so that in the rare case that it does not fit properly, you may contact Elite Tuxedo directly to make adjustments.  You will need to go to the store to have that done.
Elite Tuxedo is working hard to issue all Band student tuxedos prior to our October 24th Fall Concert.
If your student is performing in the Samohi Bands’ Fall Concert, but indicated “Choir” or “Orchestra” on the rental form, please contact us right away, so that we can inform Elite Tuxedo about our Band deadline!

2.  If your student did not get fitted at Samohi last Friday, but you still want to rent a tuxedo:

You can go to Elite Tuxedo and have the fitting done at their store.  Please call in advance  to make sure that they will be able to meet your timeline for having the finished tuxedo delivered to Samohi. Contact:
Elite Tuxedo 310-474-9090
2074 Westwood Blvd, Los Angeles

3.  If your student came to the fitting and:

a. Provided payment, but did not have a completed rental form,
b. Did not provide payment for the rental, or
c. Provided a check payment but did not provide a credit card guarantee for the return of the tuxedo, then your rental will not be processed!
In order to secure your rental,

You will need to download the Elite Tuxedo Order Form.

You must complete the top part of the form (Student Name and contact information), and the rental agreement at the bottom of the form. Your card will not be charged, unless you indicate that you want to pay by credit card.
To pay by credit card:  You may submit your order form to Elite Tuxedo via email at Call Elite at 310-474-9090 to confirm that your tuxedo will be ready when you need it. Since your student already had a fitting, Elite will have the measurements at their shop.
To pay by cash or check:  You may deliver your completed form with payment to Elite Tuxedo at 2074 Westwood Blvd. You must fill out the credit card guarantee portion of the form. Your card will not be charged, if you return all pieces of the tuxedo at the end of the school year (date TBA). Since your student already had a fitting, Elite will have the measurements at their shop.
